WATER PRESSURE CONTROL

PRV Installation

High water pressure may feel useful at the faucet, but it can be hard on the plumbing behind the walls. PRV installation helps residential and commercial property owners reduce excessive incoming pressure before it keeps wearing down pipes, valves, fixtures, and connected appliances.

Daniel’s Plumbing & Son installs pressure-reducing valves for properties with confirmed high pressure or signs that the water supply may be placing too much strain on the system.

If high pressure has already contributed to a rupture, review burst pipe repair. Widespread pipe deterioration may instead call for repiping. Explore our complete plumbing services.

PRESSURE-REDUCING VALVES

What Is a PRV?

A pressure-reducing valve, commonly called a PRV, controls the pressure entering a property from the municipal water supply. It is installed on the incoming water line and lowers higher supply pressure to a more suitable level.

A PRV does not increase weak municipal pressure. Its role is to reduce pressure that is already too high. A pressure test and review of the existing plumbing can help determine whether it fits the problem.

PRESSURE CONCERNS

What High Water Pressure May Affect

Excessive pressure places steady force on the plumbing system even when no fixture is running.

Pipe Joints and Fittings

Added pressure may strain soldered, threaded, and other connections throughout the plumbing.

Faucet Cartridges

High pressure can push against cartridges, washers, and seals and contribute to recurring drips.

Toilet Fill Valves

Toilet valves may struggle to close properly, although worn parts can create the same symptom.

Flexible Supply Hoses

Washing machine, ice maker, and toilet supply lines may face added force and repeated failures.

Water Heater Components

High pressure may contribute to relief-valve discharge and added strain on water heater connections.

Connected Appliances

Dishwashers, refrigerators, ice makers, and other equipment depend on valves, hoses, and fittings under pressure.

WARNING SIGNS

Signs You May Need PRV Installation

High pressure may show up as a pattern of noise, leaks, fixture trouble, and repeated component failures.

01

Loud Banging or Thumping
Water hammer may be influenced by high incoming pressure, although supports, valves, and other conditions can also contribute.

02

Faucets That Keep Dripping
Repeated leaks across several fixtures provide a stronger reason to test incoming pressure.

03

Toilets That Run or Refill
Checking both the fixture and supply pressure helps avoid replacing parts without addressing a broader cause.

04

Repeated Hose, Valve, or Appliance Failures
Several failures in a short period can support a closer look at the pressure serving the building.

05

A Reading Above 80 PSI
A gauge reading provides better information than judging pressure by how strong a shower feels.

WHY PRESSURE CONTROL MATTERS

How Excessive Pressure Affects the Property

01

Strain on the Plumbing System

Steady force and sudden pressure waves may contribute to worn seals, weakened joints, noisy pipes, and shorter component life.

02

Pressure at Water-Using Appliances

A PRV may reduce strain on appliance valves, hoses, and fittings. Existing leaks or damaged parts still need separate repair.

03

Water Flow and Consumption

Higher pressure can push more water through fixtures during the same amount of time. No utility savings should be promised from PRV installation alone.

THE INSTALLATION REQUEST

What to Expect When Requesting PRV Installation

01

Explain the Symptoms
Mention pipe banging, dripping faucets, running toilets, failed hoses, or water heater valve discharge.

02

Share a Pressure Reading
Provide any gauge reading and explain when and where it was taken.

03

Identify the Existing Setup
Mention whether the property already has a PRV and where the main shutoff is located.

04

Review Access and Requirements
The incoming line, valve setup, available access, property needs, and local rules can affect the scope.

05

Confirm the Right Valve and Setting
You do not need to choose a valve or pressure setting before the existing system is reviewed.

BEFORE YOU CALL

Useful Information to Have Ready

A pressure concern should be based on more than a strong shower or one noisy pipe.

Known Pressure Reading

Share any gauge result, including a reading above 80 PSI.

When Pipe Noise Occurs

Explain whether banging follows a closing faucet or an appliance that has stopped filling.

Fixtures That Drip or Run

Identify repeated faucet drips, running toilets, or several affected fixtures.

Recent Hose or Valve Failures

Mention failed supply hoses, valves, appliance connections, or water heater relief-valve concerns.

Existing PRV and Shutoff

Explain whether a PRV already exists and whether the main shutoff can be accessed.

Inspection or Code Notice

Provide any written inspection, utility, or code notice related to water pressure.

KNOW THE DIFFERENCE

PRV Installation Versus Fixture Repair

Replacing a leaking faucet cartridge or toilet valve fixes the failed fixture part. Installing a PRV addresses high pressure entering the whole plumbing system.

Sometimes both are needed. A worn fixture may still require repair after pressure is corrected, while replacing only the fixture may not stop similar failures elsewhere if incoming pressure remains excessive.

Installing a PRV does not automatically repair damage that has already occurred elsewhere in the plumbing system.

PRV INSTALLATION FAQ

Common Questions About PRV Installation

What does PRV stand for?

PRV stands for pressure-reducing valve. It controls high incoming water pressure before water moves through the property’s plumbing.

Is pressure above 80 PSI too high?

The supplied information identifies readings above 80 PSI as excessive and a possible code concern. The property and local requirements should be reviewed.

Will a PRV stop water hammer?

It may reduce pressure that contributes to pipe banging, but water hammer can have more than one cause.

Can high pressure make my toilet run?

It may place added force on the fill valve and seals. A worn toilet part can also cause running.

Does a PRV need a specific pressure setting?

The setting depends on the plumbing system, building needs, and applicable requirements.

Will PRV installation fix existing leaks?

No. It can reduce high incoming pressure, but an active leak, failed hose, damaged valve, or worn fixture still needs repair.

What should I mention when calling?

Share any pressure reading, pipe noises, dripping fixtures, running toilets, hose failures, or water heater valve concerns.

CONTROL THE PRESSURE

Talk About the Water Pressure Problem

When faucets keep dripping, pipes bang, or appliance connections fail more than once, testing the incoming pressure is a better next step than replacing parts at random. Call Daniel’s Plumbing & Son and share the symptoms, any pressure reading, and what has already been repaired.

You do not need to diagnose the valve or pick a pressure setting first. Describe what is happening, and the team can help determine whether PRV installation fits the property.
